Tree #5
Afrocarpus gracilior

A magnificent African fern pine, approximately fifty years old, once graced a Bronte Street corner, a true hidden giant near Cortland Avenue. Its massive, healthy presence offered spectacular form and welcome shade. This unique urban landmark witnessed countless Illegal Soapbox Derbies careen down the steep streets and observed the curious 'Piano on the Hill' installation from its lofty perch. Its recent removal serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the urban canopy’s fragility. The empty space now symbolizes a profound call for stronger policies protecting such unique natural treasures. This loss is more than just missing a tree; it’s a vital plea to safeguard these giants, ensuring their kind can flourish again.
