2024-ongoing
For this interactive piece, the artists invite visitors to honor a tree from their own neighborhood by contributing photographs, measurements, and personal reflections through the project website. Participants select a tree, document it, and share their impressions online—creating a living archive that blends individual memory with local ecology.
Using AI tools, the artists generate a customized image and short text tribute for each submitted tree, interweaving the visitor’s observations with the tree’s biological features and the surrounding region’s historical context. The display shows tributes from previous visitors, creating an evolving portrait of the city’s urban forest in relation to the people who live there. Goldberg and Shlain collaborated with University of California, Berkeley students Cael Magner, Josh Zhang, and Veena Sumedh in the implementation of this online installation.
