Tree #22

Phoenix canariensis

This grand Canary Island date palm, perhaps sixty years matured, presides over a storied corner of Haight Ashbury. Its expansive fronds, a lush, verdant canopy, inspire tropical recollections for many who gaze upon it. It watched impassively as the Grateful Dead were busted for drugs on Ashbury Street, their outlaw reputation forged nearby. This same resilient life force witnessed the poignant "Death of the Hippie" procession, a mock funeral marking an era's close. Through swirling change and counterculture's ebb, this tree’s silent strength gathers generations of radical dreams and quiet reflections, a true keeper of neighborhood spirit.
