Tree #2
Eucalyptus gomphocephala

This Eucalyptus gomphocephala, a monumental presence, roots itself deeply in the Presidio’s Main Post. Its imposing form and enduring resilience embody a family legacy, planted on July 4, 1876, by post trader Angelo Beretta for his daughters. This "Centennial Tree," now a solitary survivor, feels more like an heirloom than a monument.
As a green anchor, it persisted while the Army reshaped its surroundings, and a plaque from Beretta’s descendants honors its significance. From its vantage, it overlooked the golf course, transformed into a canvas of refugee tents after the 1906 earthquake. Later, it observed countless troops departing for conflicts across the Pacific, their footsteps echoing a national story. This tree silently chronicles a century and a half of San Francisco, a steadfast witness to evolution, preserving memories in its towering reach.
