In the heart of Los Angeles stands the magnificent Syzygium cumini, a champion tree rooted at University High School Charter. This majestic giant, akin to the celebrated Árbol del Tule in Oaxaca, has graced the campus for over 200 years, a witness to time itself. Nearby, the community rallied in the ’90s to protect the sacred Kuruvungna Springs from demolition, a testament to resilience. I proudly traversed 24 miles to my high school, and as an alumna, I nominated this tree for preservation, ensuring its legacy. Its grandeur inspires, reminding us of our past and the importance of safeguarding our natural heritage.
